How to Lose Belly Fat for Men

Middle-aged man looking down at his belly in a bathroom mirror, wondering how to lose stubborn belly fat.

Why sit-ups, HIIT, and fat-burning tricks aren't the answer.

If you're a man trying to lose belly fat, you've probably searched for the best exercise to get rid of it.

Maybe you've considered doing hundreds of sit-ups. Maybe you've heard that high-intensity interval training (HIIT) or sprinting is the secret to burning stubborn belly fat.

Or maybe you're looking for a supplement that will finally target the fat around your stomach.

Here's what you need to understand.

You can't choose where your body loses fat.

And once you understand that, losing belly fat becomes a lot less complicated.

Think of Your Body Like a Roll of Toilet Paper

Imagine your body is a roll of toilet paper.

As you unroll it, the roll gets smaller. You don't get to choose which section of the roll gets smaller first. You just keep removing paper until you eventually reach the cardboard core.

Three toilet paper rolls decreasing in size, illustrating how overall body fat gradually reduces during weight loss.

Body fat works in a similar way.

As you lose fat, your body gets leaner overall. You'll notice changes in your face, neck, arms, legs, chest, and eventually your stomach.

For many men, the belly is one of the last places where noticeable fat remains.

That's largely determined by genetics and how your body distributes and stores fat.

You can't force your body to burn fat from your stomach just because that's where you want to lose it.

Why Sit-Ups Won't Burn Belly Fat

Sit-ups and crunches train your abdominal muscles. They don't specifically burn the fat covering those muscles.

The same goes for sprinting, HIIT workouts, and other exercises marketed as belly-fat burners.

These activities can burn calories and improve your fitness, but they don't give you control over where your body takes fat from.

You can have strong abdominal muscles and still have a layer of fat covering them.

Training your stomach and losing fat from your stomach are two different things.

So How Do You Actually Lose Belly Fat?

You lose enough overall body fat that your stomach eventually gets leaner, too.

And the way you accomplish that is through a calorie deficit.

A calorie deficit simply means consuming fewer calories than your body burns over time.

Your body needs energy to function. When you're consistently eating less energy than you're using, your body draws on stored energy, including body fat, to make up the difference.

You can create a moderate calorie deficit or a more aggressive one.

Both can produce fat loss.

The difference is how quickly you lose weight and how difficult the process becomes to maintain.

A moderate deficit is generally easier to manage, particularly if you're trying to preserve muscle while losing fat.

The important thing is understanding that the calorie deficit drives fat loss, not a particular exercise.

Find Your Starting Number

To lose body fat, you need to know approximately how many calories your body burns each day. That's your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE).

Use the free Reclaimed Men TDEE Calculator to estimate your daily calorie needs and find your starting point.

The Belly Fat Will Come Off

Here's where a lot of men get frustrated.

They start losing weight. Their face gets leaner. Their arms get smaller. Their clothes fit differently.

But they look in the mirror and still see belly fat.

So they assume something isn't working.

They start searching for another exercise, another diet, or another trick to target their stomach.

But the process may be working exactly as it should.

You simply haven't lost enough overall body fat to reach the level of leanness you're looking for.

That doesn't mean you need to starve yourself or spend hours doing cardio.

It means you need to understand your calorie needs, establish a reasonable deficit, track your progress, and make adjustments when necessary.

And if you're strength training, you want to preserve as much muscle as possible along the way.

Stop Trying to Target Belly Fat

If your goal is to lose belly fat, stop looking for a special exercise that burns fat from your stomach.

There isn't one.

Focus on reducing your overall body fat.

Understand how many calories your body burns. Learn how to create and manage a calorie deficit. Keep strength training to protect your muscle.

And give the process enough time to work.

Remember the toilet paper roll.

You can't skip straight to the cardboard core.

You have to keep unrolling.

Fat loss isn't a diet. It's a skill.

And once you understand how it works, you can stop guessing and start managing it.
